"Grandma Mumford," as she was called by those
who
knew her well, was a kind, loving wife and mother, always trying to do
good
for those around her. While she had been quite feeble for some years,
her
death was sudden and unexpected, and she passed to the brighter shores
beyond
during what seemed a natural sleep. She was temporarily interred on the
homestead
of her daughter, Miss Lizzie Mumford, from which place she will be
taken
to Elgin, Ill., where two of her daughters are buried. The funeral
services
were conducted by Rev. Calvin Hill, and were attended by almost the
entire
community, who assembled to pay their last respects to one who
will
be greatly missed and who leaves behind kind remembrances of a life
well
spent in the good work of Christ.

—The Arriba Record
Arriba, Colorado
May 28, 1920
Charles A. Creel, founder of the town of
Arriba and
one of the pioneer citizens of Lincoln county, passed away at his home
in
Arriba Wednesday night at 11:30 o'clock. He suffered a stroke some time
ago,
and it is thought he was seized with another attack Wednesday night
which
caused his death. Mr. Creel came to eastern Colorado with the building
of
the Rock Island railroad. He homesteaded what is today the town site of
Arriba
and was one of the first white men living in that part of the county.
During
the Cripple Creek mining excitement he went to that place and was
engaged
in the mining and assaying business. He later returned to Arriba where
he
made his home ever since. Mr. Creel was engaged in the real estate
business
for many years and brought many of the homesteaders and farmers to this
section
of the state.
He came to Colorado in April, 1888, from Iowa. He
was
born at Bentensport, Iowa, October 7th, 1857, and at the time of his
death
was 68 years, four months and 17 days old.
Mr. Creel was married to Elizabeth A. Mumford at
Denver,
Colorado, in November, 1894.
Mr. Creel took the first census of the county in
1890.
In politics he was a staunch Republican.
He is survived by a widow and two brothers, Dr.
J.
C. Creel, of Parsons, Kansas, and S. W. Creel, of Afton, Iowa.
The funeral services will be conducted this
afternoon at two o'clock from the Congregational church in Arriba and a
vast throng of citizens will attend to pay tribute to their honored and
departed citizen who was among the first to come to the plains section
of eastern Colorado. Burial will be made in the Arriba cemetery. The
Jones Mortuary of Hugo will
direct the funeral. He was an upright, honest citizen and his crossing
the
Great Divide after a well spent life is mourned by a wide circle of
friends.
To the bereaved widow and two brothers and other relatives we extend
our
sympathy. We mourn with them in their hour of sorrow and affliction.

Elizabeth Creel
widow of founder of arriba died thursday elizabeth creel succumbed at flagler hospital following injuries in fall down steps tuesday. Mrs. Elizabeth Creel, oldest resident of Arriba, who was critically injured when she fell down a stairway at the E. Blair home in Arriba, Tuesday afternoon, succumbed at the Flagler Hospital Thursday morning at 4 o'clock shortly before noon (Original obituary read this way). Owing to lack of time before going to press we are unable to give an extended account of the life of this grand old woman of Arriba. She was 89 years old the 16th of May, this year, and was born at Dundee, Ill., the daughter of Pete and Phoebe Mumford. She came to Arriba from Elgin, Ill., in July, 1889, and homesteaded one-half mile east of where Arriba is located today. In October, 1894, she was united in marriage to Charles A. Creel, who was the founder of Arriba. The couple moved to Cripple Creek during the boom days but they returned to Arriba in February, 1906, where she had since resided. Mr. Creel passed away in February, 1926. Two of Mrs. Creel's sisters, who came to Arriba with her, are deceased. Miss Eliza Mumford died Aug. 10, 1939, at the age of 83. Another sister, Mrs. Emora Delana Blackwood, who was at the time probably the county's oldest citizen, died at her home in Arriba Jan. 2, 1941. She was 91 years old. While the infirmities of old age were the immediate cause of her death, injuries received when she fell at her home two years prior, fracturing her hip, was a contributing cause. In the death of Mrs. Creel the last of three sisters are now gone. They all lived to a ripe old age and spent the greater part of their life in Arriba and for many years there were familiar and picturesque characters. Mrs. Creel was a kind and Christian woman and loved to talk about the early days of the plains and of her husband who did much in promoting the progress of Lincoln county. She had a host of friends who will learn with deepest sorrow of her passing. Arrangements for the funeral had not been made as we went to press but will probably be held at Arriba and burial will be made in the Arriba cemetery. Her only close relative is an aged sister, Mrs. Fannie Fletcher, living at Marysville, Calif., who was advised of her sister's death yesterday. A nephew resides in San Francisco. Eastern Colorado Plainsman August 20, 1943 Funeral Services for Mrs. Elizabeth Creel Held Sunday Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Creel, aged Arriba pioneer, were held at the Congregational church in Arriba Sunday at 2:00 P. M. Rev. Bryant of the Flagler Congregational church officiated. Mrs. Creel's remains were laid to rest in the Arriba cemetery by the side of her husband, Charles Creel, in the family plot where her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peleg Mumford, two sisters, Miss Eliza Mumford and Mrs. Emory D. Blackwood, also rest. The Seal Funeral Home of Limon directed. The choristers were Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Culler, Miss Lola Mae Copley and James Yewell, with Mrs. Audine Peterson as pianist. They sang familiar hymns, "The Old Rugged Cross," "Rock of Ages," and "Nearer My God to Thee." Mrs. Creel was born at Dundee, Ill., May 16, 1854, and passed away at the Flagler hospital August 19, 1943, at the age of 89 years, three months and three days. When taken to the hospital her left side was paralyzed, examination disclosed, and it was thought she suffered a stroke, which caused her to fall. She came to Arriba from Elgin, Ill. in July, 1889, homesteading just east of the present Arriba town site. In October, 1894, she was united in marriage to Chas. A. Creel, who had homesteaded the land where Arriba now stands. They then moved to Cripple Creek, returning to Arriba in 1906 where she has resided since. Mr. Creel passed away in February, 1926. Mrs. Creel became a member of the Arriba Congregational church in February, 1907, by letter from the M. E. Church of Cripple Creek. She was a faithful and devoted member and always interested in the welfare of the community. Her Bible, which shows much usage, was her constant companion, and she endeavored to read a portion each day for many years past. She had told many friends for some time that she was ready to go at any time. Her keen mind and friendly manner won her many friends from pioneer days to the end of her life. Many words of sorrow have been spoken by them about her sudden demise. After the death of her sister, Mrs. Blackwood, January 2, 1941, she preferred to live alone. Some time ago she gave A. J. Copley a power of attorney in adjusting all her legal matters up to date. She leaves to mourn her passing a sister, Mrs. Fannie Fletcher, age 84, of Sacramento, Calif., and four nephews residing at Oakland, Yuba City and other nearby places in California. A telegram from two of the nephews stated that they could not come. Most all of the early day pioneers of this vicinity who still reside here were present at the final rites. Owing to the Mrs. Creel Funeral Was Held Sunday absence of any relatives, funeral arrangements were made by Mr. and Mrs. John Freel of Limon, who had been close friends for many years. And so another good citizen of Arriba has crossed the border to that Great Beyond where there will be no more death, neither tears, sorrow, nor parting. beautiful crown of the closing day, The steady gleam of the sun's last ray; While it lights for a time, form the distant west, As the voice of Nature sinks to rest. So the hoary head is a crown of light, If the feet be found in the path of right; A halo of glory, all sublime, Though the visage be marred by the hand of time. With a hope unfailing they onward go, while the evening sun is bending low. They have labored long, they have striven hard, In the vineyard here of Christ their Lord. There is beauty in the quiet life Of the aged who have won in the bitter strife, Who sweetly rest as they patiently wait, For their welcome sure at the Golden Gate.
