Wright Family

Hiram Wright

Brother to Hosea Wright

Grandson of Gabriel Wright and Deborah Ball

Sarah Wright

Daughter of Hosea Wright and Sarah Crews

First married to Zachariah Walker.

Second marriage to Bazil Trail

Third marriage to Andrew King

On June 20th 2000 I received photo copies via E-Mail

of 2 pages of the Wright family Bible.

The information that accompanied them said that the pages were

deteriorating very badly, making then difficult to read.

After opening them I decided that most of the information was readable,

and the areas with the greatest amount of stains could be slowly

and carefully worked with Adobe Photo Shop to reveal the

words hidden among the stains and blotches of ink.

So I began to work on the pages, trying to restore the look to what the

original writer must have seen. And at the same time maintain the integrity

of the documents. You can see these pages at the link below.

Wright Family Bible

They were brave defenders of their country in time of peril,

and their name was proverbial for charities and beneficence.

Following is their motto as handed down through several generations:

There is nothing purer than honesty, Nothing sweeter than charity,

Nothing warmer than love, Nothing richer than wisdom,

Nothing more steadfast than faith.

Those united in one mind form the purest, the sweetest, the warmest,

the richest, the brightest and the most steadfast happiness.

Here is some advice also, youth of the Wright clan;

That has been taught for years to the youth of the Wright clan;

Be this they simple plan,

Serve God and love they brother man.

forget not in temptation’s hour

that sin lends sorrow double power.

Count life a state upon they way,

And follow conscience, come that may,

Alike with Heaven and Earth sincere,

With hand and brow and bosom clear,

Fear God and know no other fear.

May we of later years emulate the kindly spirit of our forefathers,

and keep their precepts, thus doing them honor,

and cheering on the world in its struggle of life, as well.

We bless God that among the possibilities of humanity is a grand old age.

Old men have blessed the world in all generations.  They have blessed the

secular world, and it has been so in the religious world as well.

It was the aged Saint John who wrote the book of Revelation,

by means of which we, who live in the twentieth century,

receive our highest conceptions of heaven

“Do not say I must do so and so, just go and do it,

and come back and say it is done.”

“Do not put off till tomorrow what you can do today.”

“Always be kind to all whom you meet.”

“The bravest of men are the most tender hearted.”

“Love God and fear no man.”

Sometimes the sun seems to hang in the western horizon for half an hour,

only just to show how glorious it can be.

The day is done, the heat of shinning is over,

and the unspeakable beauty of the western skies baffle description.

So God seems to let some of his people linger in the west after their work is

done, that men may look on them and see how beautiful they are.

Some are lingering there now;

do you behold their beauty, shining out though Christ Jesus?

I was lucky enough to find a copy of a book called

Four Revolutionary Soldiers and Their Descendants

By: Eloise M. Roberts

This book covers some of the early Wrights that settled in the Americas, and helped win our independence.

  • Mary Wright:

Enjoying your website. Hiram Wright was the grandson, not the son of Gabriel and Deborah. Hiram is the brother and son of Hosea Wright – so it gets confusing!

There are 3 Hoseas in the immediate family
Hosea b~1784(m Sarah Ladd Crew), son of Gabriel
Hosea Jr, b~1802 son of Hosea, grandson of Gabriel
Hosea B b~1795(m: Mary Rankin), son of Joab/Job, grandson of Gabriel.

There are many sources online which have Mary Rankin married to Hosea, Jr but that is incorrect. She is married to Hosea, son of Joab, grandson of Gabriel

  • admin:

    Thanks Mary
Your comment was appreciated, I had rebuilt the web site a little while back, and that got by me somehow. I also descovered a link that was broken on the 4 Revolutionary Soldiers, and fixed it. Feel free to look around, comment or contribute. Especially if you have any old photos that I could post up and add to my collection.

  • Gary Wright:

    Hi,
I’m Gary Wright and I am a great….grandson of Gabriel Wright. My lineage from him goes as follows. His son Hosea; his son Hiram; his son Martin VanBuren; his son David; his son Benjamin; his son Vildie; (Me) Gary; my son Lance; his daughter Valerie.

I am trying to get them across the water to Scotland. I know that Gabriel was born in Jedborough, Scotland around 1740. His father was supposed to be James Wright (McGregor?) and his Mother Isobel Kenmore? Kenmore is also an area in Scotland. If you have any information, let me know. Thanks, Gary Wright

  • Susan:

Hiram Wright married to Sarah Shippy. Is this perhaps the son of Hosea’s brother Hiram? His daugher, Susannah, born about 1847, married a Spidel.

  • Glenn:

I have added a descendants file for the Wright family starting with Gabriel Wright. It’s not a complete file, but does represents my research on that line. If anyone can add more to the files, or add photos etc. Please contact me.

  • Shelley McGregor:

What part of the country did this Wright Family come from? I have a Wright relative who fought in the Civil War. His family came from Erie County, New York. His name was Ransom K. Wright.

  • Glenn:

My line of Wrights came out of the Virginia and Ohio area. Settling into the Mercer Missouri area, where a great many of them are buried. They have been an elusive bunch that have ended up with one of those “BRICK” walls.

  • Penny Reed:

    Glenn,
I have been confused for awhile about all the Hoseas. My Hosea b. 1820 is found in 1850 Clark, Clinton, OH. He married Mary A. Unknown. Among his children were Allen and my ancestor Nancy Jane b. 1849.They moved to IN from there. Who is his father???
    I found OH census records:
    1820 Jefferson, Fayette, Hosea,Sr aged 26-44; Hosea Jr., aged 16-25;
1830 Jefferson, Fayette, Hosea aged 30-39; 1830 Clark, Clinton, Hosea, aged 40-49.
I also found an IL site which listed a Hosea from OH who migrated there with 3 daughters.
    I need a clue here!!

  • Glenn:

    Hi Penny
I have to admit that when you get back into the 1800s it seems that almost everyone has the same name. it doesn’t matter if you looking for the men or the women, it just gets confusing. For Hosea b. Feb 11, 1820 in Clinton County Ohio, I have his parents as Hosea Wright b. April 2, 1784 and Sarah Crews b. July 13, 1786 both from Virginia. My Line is of of Sarah, sister to the 1820 Hosea. Here is a Descendants chart, I hope that if gives you a little help, in sorting things out. In my records I have your Nancy Jane b. abt 1849 in Ohio, But don’t have her husbands name or their kids listed so maybe you can help me a little too, your Nancy and I would be 1st cousins 4 times removed.
also I have a note attached to the 1820 Hosea :
State of Ohio Clinton County SS. On the 5th day of September 1841 I
solemnized the marriage of Hosea Wright with Mary Ann Gowan. James West, J.P. of Clark Township. But could not be certain it was their wedding, but pretty sure it is.

    Glenn,

    Johnathan WRIGHT
    | | b. 18 Feb 1811

Johnathan Wright married Mary “Polly” Moon. Among their children is Lydia Olive Wright, born October 1855 near Cazenovia, Richland Co., Wisconsin.

I suspect Mary died in childbirth; Lydia Olive Wright is my great-great grandmother. She married Calvin Smith when she was 15. Her second son, Earl Carlton Smith, is a maternal great grandfather

  • Shirley Koester:

I wonder if anyone has information about either Guernsey or Averton Wright.(both born early 1800’s). I think they may have been brothers (?). My great, great grandmother, Amy M. Randall,( b. 1818 NY d.1885 MI), was married first to Guernsey Wright – perhaps in 1840, father of Burton Wright and Adeline Wright(Mcmurtrie)then married to Averton Wright. She married husband no 3 – Abner Fordham and move to Michigan

  • Shirley Koester:

Hi, I am descended from Amy M. Randall (b. 1819 – Bergen, NY) and Averton Wright. They were married in western New York State, town of Bergen, Genesee County, NY. Amy first married Guernsey Wright – it is assumed he died and she subsequently married Averton Wright.

Guernsey and Amy had two children: Burton (died in the Civil War). and Adeline. Averton and Amy had two children: Harriet Nancy and John Greeleaf.

Does anyone have information on this branch of the Wright family?

  • Glenn:

These are all names that I do not have in my files. Lets hope someone can fill in the blanks.
    Glenn
